Taneycomo Festival Orchestra is coming back to the Ozarks this June with an all new lineup of free concerts for the public. Events will start June 16 and carry through to June 29.
TFO first took to the stage in 2012 after Larkin Sanders, founder, was inspired by a similar festival in Wisconsin. Her two weeks with the festival made her want to give a similar experience to residents in the Ozarks. Shortly after, in 2011, she began planning for the first Taneycomo Festival Orchestra concert.
This year will mark the eighth concert series that TFO has performed in the Branson area. According to a press release, it will also be the first year the group will be working with the Branson Arts Council and the Southern Missouri Arts Connection to bring a new ensemble, Taneycomo Harmoniemusik, to the stage. Taneycomo Harmoniemusik will be giving two performances, the first of which will be at the Historic Owen Theatre June 20. The second Taneycomo Harmoniemusik performance will be June 22 at Chad A. Fuqua Memorial Park in Hollister. This will be part of the Picnic in the Park event that TFO is putting on in collaboration with Southern Missouri Arts Connection. The picnic will offer attendees a unique experience with local artists, food trucks and live music.“(This) harkens back to the days of old when they used wind ensembles for parties,” Sanders said. “In the 1800s and 1900s, they used wind ensembles for outdoor parties and this is what it is; an outdoor party.”
Along with these new events, TFO will also be continuing to work with youth in the community through a partnership with the Taneyhills Community Library. According to the release, TFO will be at the library June 18 at 10:30 a.m. to perform for children participating in the Summer Reading Program. Other activities open to younger community members include opportunities for Junior High and High School students to visit the open rehearsals at the Branson High School auditorium Monday through Friday starting at 10 a.m., June 16 - June 29, according to the release.
TFO, according to Sanders, has made it their mission to foster an environment that has a relaxing and casual atmosphere.
“We encourage casual dress, applause whenever you feel like it. You’ll most likely see me at concerts without any shoes on,” Sanders said.
Through this environment, TFO hopes to overcome the stereotypical stuffy attitude typically attributed with classical music concerts, Sanders said.
According to the TFO schedule, the groups first event will be a meet and greet June 16 at Stockstill Park. Other events will include the TFO All-Star Soloists Concerto Edition June 19 at the Branson High School Auditorium, Taneycomo Chamber Jazz June 21 at the Downing Street Pour House, and Taneycomo Chamber Players - Our Favorite Pieces June 28 at Fellowship at Cross Creek church.
