Branson could be home to another national grocery chain in the coming year.

According to Branson Mayor Karen Best, a district manager with Aldi told her the grocery chain would open a Branson location in 2019.

“I said I’d been lobbying for an Aldi for years,” Best said. “(I asked) ‘When is Branson going to get an Aldi?’ She said ‘We’ll be there in 2019.’

According to Best, the district manager said the chain was considering three potential Branson locations, but did not know where the locations are.

“I believe it will help our citizens and our visitors,” Best said.

A phone call to the district manager was not returned by press time.

According to its corporate website, the first Aldi store opened in 1961 in Germany. Headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, Aldi now has more than 1,600 stores across 35 states, employs over 25,000 people and has been steadily growing since opening its first U.S. store in Iowa in 1976. The website says the company plans to have 2,000 U.S. stores this year.

At least one Aldi would be a serious boon for Branson. With the decline in sales for Walmart combined with the expected bankruptcy of Bi-Lo(which includes Winn-Dixie), Aldi is capitalizing with aggressive expansion throughout the United States.

In June 2017, Aldi announced the opening of 900 new stores as part of it's planned $3.4 billion capital investment which comes with 25,000 new jobs. Aldi also owns Trader Joe's, so anticipate Branson store openings for that brand as well.
