The popular grocery chain, Aldi is coming to Branson after years of speculation.

According to Steve Critchfield with Commercial One Brokers, the company Aldi purchased a lot at The Shoppes at Branson Hills.

“It’s just east on the road where Chili’s is, I think it’s right across the street from Home Depot,” Critchfield said.

A Taney County GIS map shows Aldi now owns a 2.2-acre lot north of Walmart and across the street fro Lakeland Pharmacy.

“Their hope is to open in summer 2020,” Jay R. Lindner, of Lindner Properties said. The Columbia-based company worked with Aldi on the purchase.

In 2018, then-Branson Mayor Karen Best said on Facebook an Aldi location was planned for the area to open in Branson in 2019.

In 2019, Melody Pettit, city communications manager, said Aldi representatives met with city staff in January, during an Open for Business meeting. According to the city’s website, the meeting is “An informal setting where business owners and city representatives meet to discuss and resolve technical issues affecting proposed business development.”

Ted Martin, Branson fire chief, also commented at the time, saying interest in the chain coming to Branson has been encouraging.

“It’s no secret they are looking at expanding their market by securing a store location in Branson,” Martin wrote on Facebook in January. “The Aldi’s leadership and development teams are working to secure the right location and working with community leaders and city staff to make this happen. Remember, there are a lot of pieces in the puzzle to make a big project like this go, location, access, land price, construction, land development, a lot of planning.”

At the time, when reached for comment, a representative for Aldi said there were no definite plans for a Branson Aldi location.

“At this time we do not have any solidified plans for a store in Branson,” Mark Bersted, Olathe division vice president for Aldi, said in a written statement in January of 2019.

According to Aldi’s corporate website, the chain was first opened a store in 1961 in Germany, making Aldi the first discounter in the world. Headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, Aldi now has more than 1,900 stores across 36 states, employs over 25,000 people and has been steadily growing since opening its first US store in Iowa in 1976.

“And with more demand comes more stores. Over the past decade, we’ve nearly doubled in size and by 2022, Aldi will bring its total number of US stores to nearly 2,500,” the website reads.”

I hope it's true but there have been so many projects that were "Coming to Branson" that have never materialized. (The skyway from the Landing out to Silver Dollar City or The Hatfields and McCoys dinner show at the RFD theater as two examples). I will look forward to shopping there if it is built.
