The cast of “Shrek the Musical” will take the stage to open the show Friday night at the Welk Resort Theatre in Branson.

After months spent building sets, casting and rehearsal, the Welk Resort Theatre in Branson is finally debuting its edition of “Shrek The Musical” Friday night. The show is set to run through Aug. 10.

“Shrek The Musical,” a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, features  all-new songs from “Fun Home,” “Caroline, or Change,” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie” songwriter Jeanine Tesori, as well as a “side-splitting” book by David Lindsay-Abaire.

This tale follows Shrek and all of his friends from the film, who come to life on stage and bring all of the “hilarious fun, daring adventure and heart-warming feeling” that only an ogre, his wisecracking donkey and a cast of fairy tale misfits can bring.

“We are so proud to be able to present a fantastic new production of ‘Shrek The Musical’ this summer,” Welk Resort Theatre’s General Manager Susan Smith said. “We’ve had such a great experience presenting musical theatre in Branson for the past four years with our production of ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ that we’ve decided to introduce a musical production we feel the whole family will enjoy.

“We can’t wait for our guests to experience all of the same laughter and fun from the movie ‘Shrek,’ live on stage. It’s going to be something families will not want to miss.”

While “Shrek The Musical” is slated to run this summer, the Welk Resort Theatre’s production of “Million Dollar Quartet” will return Aug. 29, and run through Nov. 30.
